A look inside
These screens use a made-up example child ("Maya").

What you get
Real output from PlainIEP for a fictional sample IEP (3rd grader, autism + speech). Excerpt:
Plain-English summary
Your child qualifies for special education under Autism, with Speech or Language Impairment as a second area. The main needs are speech, social skills and reading fluency. Right now your child reads 42 words correct per minute on grade 3 passages and uses 1-2 word requests in class. The annual review is November 12, 2026.
Services
| Service | Minutes | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Speech-language therapy | 60 min / week | Therapy room |
| Specialized reading | 45 min / day | Resource room |
| Occupational therapy | 30 min / week | Classroom |
| Social skills group | 30 min / week | Counselor office |
Goals check
Measurable: Speech: 3-4 word requests in 8 of 10 chances, from a baseline of 2 of 10, measured by therapist data.
Vague: Reading: "Maya will increase reading fluency." No baseline target, no measure, no timeframe.
Suggested: "Will read grade 3 passages at 60 words correct per minute (from 42), measured by biweekly fluency probes, by the annual review."
Red flags
- Two of three goals have no target or way to measure progress.
- "Breaks when needed" doesn't say who decides or how often.
Questions to ask
- How will you measure my child's progress on the social skills goal, and how often will I see the data?
- Can we add a specific fluency target to the reading goal?

Questions
Is this legal advice?
No. PlainIEP is an education and organization tool. It helps you understand the document and prepare, but it doesn't represent you. For free help, contact your state's Parent Training and Information Center. For legal advice, talk to a licensed attorney.
What happens to my child's IEP?
Your PDF never leaves your device: text is extracted in your browser, sent once for analysis, and not stored or logged. You can also blank out your child's name first. We never sell data or use it to train AI.
Which states?
Any US state. IEPs follow the federal IDEA law, so the structure is similar everywhere.
